Bit pointless IMHO.
doing a joint development with another company, contractually obliged 
to let
them do some work on our server and we know they are trying (but not 
having
much luck...) to write an app exactly like the one we have written.

Just that something like tidy/jtidy will add all your whitespace back 
and if they have access to your CFM templates they probably be able to 
un/de-obfuscate(?) them

Can't you just give them no access to your templates? Lock them down 
with OS permissions?
