Protx is simply a payment gateway -- they take the CC details and attempt to authorise the transaction *on your behalf*. As such, you must have an internet merchant account with your aquiring bank (be it Barclays, Lloyds TSB etc); the process to obtain this in itself can be a mission to go through involving auditing of company accounts etc. Basically, PayPal acts as a middle man between yourself and a company like Protx. With PayPal, you can set up an account nice and easy and they stick the money into your account. You've a nice front end, but people have to sign up with PP themselves to make a payment. What happens is that PP themselves take the money from the payee's account, and then transfer the cash to you. Everything goes through their merchant account etc. By going directly to a payment gateway it allows you a lot more control -- e.g. you can take payments directly from your own site, including repeat monthly payments, or provide an Amazon-esque "register your card now and you don't have to type it in when you check out in the future" type thing. But this added control comes at the price of a lot more hassle and added complexity - you have to build the entire payment process yourself, although Protx now provide a basic custom tag to help you along the way...
