Is the Instance name anything unusual? I've had problems in the past where the instance name was too long and my VB apps wouldn't connect correctly because the network drivers I was using couldn't cope. Spaces and such can cause problems. We keep a lot of our stuff to all upper case and less than 8 chars because of our old NT boxes. Just a thought.
