Gordon,
If you can make sure you do 301 redirects to the corresponding content
on the new site then a lot of the potential damage can be prevented. A
301 redirect means moved permenantly, this is accepted by google and
has worked for us several times. Also make sure that any old urls that
don't have a natural replacement on the new site should go to a page
explaining what has happened to the old site so that visitors do not
end up at your 404 page from search engine results. You do run the
risk that this becomes a highly ranked page as it can be reached from
many locations, this is not all bad as once your site has been swapped
over for many months if you do find that this page is highly ranked
then you can use it to put offers on to make use of that ranking.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

Simon

We have an existing site in CF which has been established 10 years
is ranked well in the search engines. We have a new site which we
wish to take over again in CF but XHTML, better designed and with
a domain name that is more appropriate for its purpose.

The old site has pages of information which is ranked and we are
very apprehensive about phasing everything in to avoid losing our
rankings and to avoid Google or any other search engine thinking we
are trying to work some sort of smart trick to gain rankings.

Due to the nature of the site and of the new features we can not
duplicate the directory paths etc. I understand that search
engines in general do not like redirects when indexing pages.

They are both CF sites (CF5) both on the same server.

Has anyone been through a similar exercise and does anyone have
some suggestions for good practice and probably even more important
what not to do?

Thanks for any help.

Gordon
