How about solving it by not doing the work that the Client and/or
Designer should be doing?

The Client should have supplied consistent images from the start, and
ideally ones with alpha channel transparency for the background.

That aside, the Designer and Client should have been working together
on the design, ensuring that existing resources (logos, product
images, etc) all fit with the proposed designs.

And *that* aside, the Designer should be capable of converting the
images to have an alpha-channel.
I suspect this wont be *fully* scriptable with PS (depends on whether
you can say "all white is background" and if the edges are consistent
enough to describe with a rule - both relatively unlikely), so how
long it takes depends on the quantity you've described as "a lot", but
it is certainly something that falls under the remit of the Designer,
not the Developer.
