coverts that layer to 16 colours, trims the text horizontally but not

essential to have) or trimming it all round, then exports if a .gif with
a filename the same as the name of that layer?

you can do above or any other test method and record history/steps for this
and turn into batch cojmmand

do a search with batch in FWMX, choose batch processing, add your options
and tasks. Create a command using the history panel as in

"Creating commands
You can save groups of steps in the History panel as a command that you can
reuse. You can execute saved commands in any Fireworks document. They are
not document-specific.

Saved commands are stored as JSF files in your user-specific Commands folder
on your hard disk. The exact location of this folder varies depending on
your operating system. For more information, see Working with configuration
files.

To save steps as a command:
Choose the steps to save as a command:
Click a step, then Shift-click another to select a range of steps to save as
a command.
Control-click (Windows) or Command-click (Macintosh) to select noncontiguous
steps.
Click the Save Steps as Command button at the bottom of the History panel.
Enter a name for the command and click OK.
The command appears on the Commands menu.

To undo or redo steps using the History panel:
Drag the Undo Marker up the panel until you reach the last step you want to
undo or redo.
Click along the Undo Marker track on the left of the History panel.
Note: Undone steps remain in the History panel highlighted in gray.

To change the number of steps the History panel remembers:
Choose Edit > Preferences.
Note: On Mac OS X, choose Fireworks > Preferences.

Change Undo Steps to the number of steps you want the History panel to
record.
Note: Additional steps require more computer memory.

To clear all steps from the History panel:
Choose Clear History from the History panel Options menu.

Subject: [ cf-dev ] Batch job to generate text for web site

Sorry for yet another OT, but tried this on a Fireworks list, but there
were no takers. Anyone know the best way of doing a simple batch job in
FWMX? Thanks.

=================================================
I need to be able to generate a lot of images that are simple black
heading text in greyscale, each using the same font, size, kerning
& colour. The only that's different in each instance is the text and
I'm trying to work out what's the fastest way of doing this in
Fireworks.

Is there a way of (say) creating a .png with each bit of text on a
different layer and creating a batch job that chugs through each layer,
coverts that layer to 16 colours, trims the text horizontally but not
vertically (so the baseline is always the same on; nice, but not
essential to have) or trimming it all round, then exports if a .gif with
a filename the same as the name of that layer?

Doable? I'm just looking for the quickest route from A to B, so any
suggestions welcome. Thanks!
