Thanks for all the info, Colm; that's great. I guess if it's done as a single image with multiple layers, I'd need a "layer.next" command (which I can't find) to loop through each layer, hide all others, reduce colour depth, trim and export, or whatever. Hey, no great shakes, I'll just have to do each document individually if it comes to it.
