I think you will need to change the way you're using virtual hosts.

You need to have a:

NameVirtualHost (somename)

and a: 

<virtualhost (somename)>

</virtualhost>

e.g.

NameVirtualHost local.spike.org.uk

<VirtualHost local.spike.org.uk>
    ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
    DocumentRoot d:\sites\spike.org.uk\wwwroot
    ServerName local.spike.org.uk
    ErrorLog logs/local.spike.org.uk-error_log
    CustomLog logs/local.spike.org.uk-access_log common
</virtualhost>

You may also need to add an entry for localhost to make sure that
requests go there correctly.
