1. Yes, it makes Sense for Sun to buy it and make it affordable for small budgets. 2. It would be nice if M$ just accepted that developing on all platforms is an inevitable path they need to take.

CFMX will not go on every .NET server. It may get integrated to be a .NET package, but think about it. It would be easier for MS to re-write the package in C# (or some such other language) and therefore it would lose it's cross-platform nature (unless MS bring out C# and .NET stuff for *nix). The code is not wonderfully hard to replicate, take a look at bluedragon for example. It uses the CF tags and functions (I think) so the language doesn't need to die out. The problem comes in what MS would call "Licensing". At least with the current situation, we have a "buy a licence, use the product" thing going on. With MS, it could be, "buy this, continue to pay and you can use it". CF will therefore die out because it would not be a free add-on and also since ASP.NET developers are not hard to come by (although they are nowhere near as good as those in the CF community). So, we either have a situation where someone from the Java side buys MM eg Sun,IBM etc or we have MS buying MM. If no-one buys MM, I think it would be better, but it's a bit unlikely. As soon as there was talk of MM buying Allaire it was pretty much assumed it would. It made a shrewd move to combine toolsets, and it's all about money. The only thing is, I'm not entirely certain CF will continue to be around as a growing toolset within 3 years anyway. CF is entirely a web language, and unlike Java or .NET, CF loses on it's cost. Java and .NET are free (unless you buy dev tools which are unnecessary) and are effectively standard to install and run whereas CF is not (although you can develop with it for free). If the Java side buys MM, it will allow the toolset to grow and become even more integrated (what I mean is, CF will compile into servlets, not custom bytecode and therefore be even more portable and usable). If MS buys it, it will become something else, that none of us really know, and may not survive... Just some thoughts... I'm going out to ponder my future with Java and/or C# as well as CF!
