Answering several points at once here.

1. Why do people believe anything written in The Register? Its complete arse
at the best of times.

2. We see these types of rumours 2 or 3 times a year and it always complete
arse.

3. As for CF being expensive... how so? At 500 quid for professional, I'd
say its cheap as is possible, considering you're getting an application
server that can run hundreds of sites. It pays for itself with your first
project.

Also, you have to remember that ColdFusion server is not just ColdFusion...
it comes with 3rd party tools, most important of which is Verity. Recent
debates have rolled on about Blue Dragon, which is a cheaper option and
pretty damn good. But its not in direct competition because its not as fully
featured and therefore it must be priced lower to be able to get a share of
the market.

ASP is free and always has been, but that never stopped CF becoming as big
as it has. And CF used to be even more expensive than it is now. My
arguments for people who ask why I choose to build on a non-free platform
are simple: development is about 4 times faster in CF, so in any project
more than a couple of days worth of work, the extra cost is cancelled out by
the reduced cost of implementation. CF is faster and more robust than ASP
and PHP, blah blah blah.

Will CF die? No. Why should it? As I mentioned before, ColdFusion usage has
been growing despite being a commercial product up against freebies such as
ASP and PHP. It really speaks for itself. Plenty of computer languages have
stood the test of time even though cheaper solutions have come along. Just
look at COBOL and suchlike.
