This may be waaaaaay off base, but I found that if you did things in a
particular sequence in the DSN setup window that it caused problems
connection. Something like (wracking memory)

 - checking Trusted Connection (by which I took it to mean it didn't
pass credentials)
 - then clicking Advanced Settings
 - not changing anything
 - then clicking Submit.

I had a feeling that displaying the username and password fields causes
those empty values to be saved and then sent via the connection
properties, even though you've checked the Trusted Connection box......
or something.
