This may be waaaaaay off base, but I found that if you did things in a particular sequence in the DSN setup window that it caused problems connection. Something like (wracking memory) - checking Trusted Connection (by which I took it to mean it didn't pass credentials) - then clicking Advanced Settings - not changing anything - then clicking Submit.
