Yes have tried pinging but nothing happens.
Httpd.conf:

ServerName site1
</VirtualHost>
<VirtualHost *>
DocumentRoot "d:/My Documents/My Webs/site2"
ServerName site2
</VirtualHost>
hosts:
# lots of commecnts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 site1
127.0.0.1 site2
I have even tried commenting out the localhost entry but that still
works.

Resolution is done HOSTS first, then DNS. Have you tried pinging the new
hostnames just to make sure they resolve?
