From past experience I never found a way to do this without first
disabling the password. Would be interested to know if there is a way...

you can set the password using a CF template, so this template must encrypt the plain text using CF code. So, "presumably" you could obtain the seed value for the encryption "if" you could just decrypt the template which encrypts the plain text password and adds it to the registry. Then you'd "probably" be able to use the decrypt() function to get the plain text from your encrypted password :)
