To expand on that, I would first have a look at some of the articles and
resources that are available on CVS just to get a idea of the concepts
behind using it which may not be readily apparent using Tortoise CVS.
(You may have done this already)  I believe there is also an O'reilly
pocket reference which covers it. 

The installation instructions for setting up Tortoise are quite easy to
follow ( I think its an executable ) also you may need a diff program
that you can use when you want to merge or simply compare files. I've
used 
Winmerge...
