Winmerge, yes, v. good. Also CVS is not perfect - ie. no renaming or deleting folders without a little pain involved.

(You may have done this already) I believe there is also an O'reilly pocket reference which covers it. The installation instructions for setting up Tortoise are quite easy to follow ( I think its an executable ) also you may need a diff program that you can use when you want to merge or simply compare files.
