Yup - but with that kind of logic no commercial company would be around!! And most seem to be doing alright.
At the end of the day you get what you pay for. Most companies are happy with a license fee, knowing that they get a guaranteed service, support and quality. They are different products though - I haven't used Farcry a great deal, so I'm not the best person to compare - and I don't think you should be comparing unless you've tried both options. May be Daemon will make more money now that they've put Farcry out to Open Source - perhaps not. Farcry was a commercial product - now it's gone open-source. You can draw your own conclusions from that. Oh, and that extensibility issue ;o) - yup, you should definitely speak to Straker!! Extensibility and developer-friendliness are core features to Shado. If you can find 30 minutes, ask Straker for a presentation - I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised!
