If I have a varchar field which is 255 characters what are the consequences of upping this to say 500.
that'd really depend on your DBMS, but guessing you are using SQL server, the only important issue I can think of off-hand is with indexes - there is a maximum length for the columns that included in an index (900 in SQL Server 7, dunno about 2000). If your varchar(255) column is included in a composite index, then increasing the column size to 500 may result in the total length of all columns included in the index to something gt 900.
