You can use the alias instead an IP address.

With client tools... 
I think on Win2k/XP it is installed by default as
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cliconfg.exe
But not 100% if this is for all configurations, and also about other OS.

Where do u specify this in enterprise manager, when registering a new
server there is no option to do anything other than set the server ip,
username and password.
