It never crossed my mind to update the bloody Oracle ODBC drivers. Guess you never think of the obvious on 5 hours sleep.

I'm not sure what the exact issue is with the JDBC driver, but would it now be possible to use the JDBC driver for data retrieval but the ODBC driver for modification? If it was me, I'd be happy with that from a performance point of view.
