UK. Over the past 12-24 months we've really been focusing our efforts on
bringing ColdFusion to new communities and customers. We have a whole
range of things planned going forward, but I'd love to hear from this
community what you think is missing and what else you'd like to see.

well really, that bit about 'focusing our efforts on bringing ColdFusion to
new communities and customers' sums it up - getting CF more widely used
seems to me to require both a bottom-up (ie selling the benefits to
developers) and top-down (ie selling the benefits to people who will employ
those developers to build sites in CF) approach. Either/or just won't work -
there's no point training people in CF if the jobs aren't there, there's no
point clients wanting to build sites in CF if they can't find developers in
their area to do the work.

For example: I live in Folkestone, Kent, and I don't know of any other CF
developers anywhere near (although to be fair East Kent doens't exactly have
a well-developed New Media/IT industry). Shepway District Council has just
rebuilt its site - I pitched for it, but they eventually went the ASP route,
largely I suspect because they'd never heard of CF (to be fair to the
developer who _did_ get the contract they made a nice job of it -
http://www.shepway.gov.uk/ - but I bet I could have done it quicker, easier
and cheaper in CF, with a more easily-maintainable codebase). Again, I had a
conversation with a potential client in Brighton a few months back, I
suggested using CF for the build and he said 'You mean ASP.' I said 'No,
cold fusion', and he said 'What's that?'

I think MM - if they're serious about CF - needs to employ some CF
evangelists: which I know sounds naff, but why do you think MS technologies
are considered by so many (especially clients) to be the default? Because
years ago MS _did_ employ technology evangelists to go out there and preach.
A difficult and time-consuming job, but it can pay dividends over time.

When you look at what a lame piece of crap FrontPage is (IMHO, obviously ;-)
compared to CFStudio (I'm still using CF4.5, I use CFStudio every day, I
think it's one of the best pieces of software I have _ever_ used) you have
to wonder why MM isn't carrying the battle to the enemy. As someone said
earlier, many developers either don't use or don't llke DW (I fall into both
camps, I'm afraid), so what's needed, it seems to me, are different
strategies for different target groups. One strategy for new web
developers/home users/developers who do like DW, another for those who like
the power and flexibility (and sad geekiness? ;-) of hand-coding. And yet
another strategy for potential clients...

all just my tuppenyworth, obviously
