Subject: Re: [ cf-dev ] The state of ColdFusion in the UK
I think it's fair to say that while MM haven't done enough, it's not
like they've been doing nothing all this time. I do however feel that
on some occasions, the user groups in the UK and Europe shoot themselves
in the foot!
Let's face it. Currently, CF isn't a widely used, widely known platform
for building web apps. It may be the one of the best out there in terms
of speed of dev and maintainability (allegedly) BUT I am concerned that
MM's current strategy is very North American based. I wonder what the
usefulness of pushing stuff in this country would be...
We all know of "the best products" not getting market share. Look at
Mac's (the cross-browser's worst enemy) and how little of the market
they have, even though they have easily been the best usability wise for
years. The Microsoft Platform was in no way the best when it was
launched. It all came down to marketing and IBM had a huge amount to
play in that.
I think a lot of MM's loss of market share is to do with the fact that
the internet has changed, and JSP/PHP/ASP are effectively "free" server
products to the end user. I reckon that in this country, CF is too
highly priced, and not marketed well enough. Probably the best
indication of this, is that the "who uses CF in the UK?" is asked a huge
amount. Maybe a hint that there are UK based companies in the showcase
on http://www.macromedia.co.uk could be a sensible place to point
people? But the problem is, that this is often a FLASH showcase and not
a CF showcase.
Anyway... enough of a rant! I want CF to survive and thrive again, so
that we can ALL benefit from it! Come on MM... no-one's blaming you for
stuff, but PLEASE can you provide more info for those developers who are
trying to sell to others! We ALL need to be CF evangelists!
