Hmm, I don't know if this is related--please disregard if not.
I get very similar effects upon using xrandr to add and remove screens on i915.
Upon adding, only the panel stops updating. Upon removing, typically nothing
gets updated ever again.
Switching to text console and restarting compiz makes everything go back to
normal.
