What plugin is reponsible for doing the animation for you? I tried to reproduce
that using the fade and the animation plugins, but failed.

That's a driver problem - or rather a race condition in the design of the
Xdamage extension.

Can you re-do the video using slow animations (there is a key binding to enable
them under General options -> Key bindings)? This might make the actual problem
a bit more obvious.
