vmware support for this stuff (GL in particular) used to be totally 
absent, in recent versions it's, shall we say "limited" - for a couple
of select architectures (I think all Nvidia) some capabilities
may be available, otherwise you get a really dumb device as
the emulated "vmware adapter" and things will be happening
entirely in software as a result.  Actually it sounds like vmware
is focusing their support for acceleration, etc. on DirectX
instead.  That's from my experience with vmware, not with
clutter, so go ahead and wait for more expert opinions.
