I wouldn't use a bare board at home, there is too much static
electricity there.  But these aren't very needed.

Mine is Adafruit 954 [0] bought at [1].  Similar ones should be
available elsewhere (choose one with separate 3.3V wires, not a single
header for a specific different SBC).  Don't connect the red cable.

I asked, since I consider it the most important device when accessing
these computers.  They provide all info when u-boot configuration,
microSD card or (in Cubieboard) a filesystem on a SATA SSD fails, before
Ethernet can be used.
