Also try setting the following in Thunderbird's Config Editor:
(you may need to manually create these fields)

mail.imap.expunge_after_delete => boolean => true
mail.imap.expunge_option => integer => 1

This mostly auto-expunges for me.. sometimes I have to force an
expunge via File -> Compact Folders.  (After setting the values,
you'll want to restart tbird.)
