I don't have a really strong opinion on 'Should we move to Java 8' but at the same time would not really be happy dealing with 2 continuously diverging branches. I wouldn't want to rewrite the same implementation twice over and get it to work.
I am not sure about others but I think it will also make it tougher to attract contributors knowing they might have to deal with 2 divergent branches. At the same time, if there's a reason compelling enough that makes the lives of everyone involved better (read, easier), I'll be in for it.
