If you have access to a Solaris/Sparc box then the results of your tests would
be interesting regardless of the JVM issue (like I said, we don't have access
to such a machine). You could also try the 5.x branch (which is the newest) and
trunk (bleeding edge) if you have time/ resources.

JVM hiccups are actually fairly common with Lucene. Search the JIRA and you'll
find a lot of references.
