More tests passing with suggestions from [~risdenk]. Patch attached. The two
that are of most interest now are:

I'll run a bunch of iterations over the full test suite overnight to see what
else pops out. I'm playing a bit of "whack a mole" as when some tests get
fixed, others seem to pop out....
BasicDistributedZkTest is still a problem too, but I'm not sure it's this
change or the general flakiness of that test, likely the latter.
