No, I'm not crazy. The change I had to make for 8x to pass precommit is _not_
necessary for trunk. OTOH, trunk also passes precommit with the change, so I'll
update the trunk too....
BTW, ran full precommit/test under Java 8 for 8x, so that might have some
bearing, although what I can't imagine.
I wouldn't be surprised if this has an effect on some of our tests, I'll be
looking extra closely at the test results starting tomorrow.
