I agree with simon here, can't we spin off a different issue for these?

Seems like this is really a higher level thing that belongs on a fieldcache 
issue, in my opinion docvalues should just be per-document values... 
(i think its great if we can use it under the covers to speed up some use case: 
not sure one exists here...)

I would rather we simplify docvalues behind the scenes, allow it to grow and 
mature iteratively on its own without shoving fieldcache into it.
