I've been reading through the design docs on the wiki a bit. Not sure if this
issue is the best place to discuss, but I'm curious/concerned about the locking
stuff. Seems like it might be simpler/faster/more scalable to go with what is
described in the "Alternate to Cluster Lock" section. Generally speaking, it
seems like we should avoid locks as much as possible. Should be more scalable
and it should be less code, right?
