My recommendation is to commit the patch against trunk with an appropriate note
in README.TXT. However, I would recommend against releasing binaries for it, or
adding it into build/test scripts. It's essentially already in the repository
anyways, my patch just saves people a lot of work should they want to build it.
This also gives users a clear sign-post informing them of the status of this
code.
I definitely think we should have a broader discussion about replacing it, and
have been working on a long reply to Nick on that very topic. Based on that
discussion, I would recommend closing this ticket and optionally creating a new
JIRA ticket for that effort. I think this patch may be useful code in
considering alternative designs, though.
