I can't even predict all the good things that can come out of owning this layer of the app. The same way we couldn't predict all the changes that would come with the freedom of flexible indexing. I also don't think we need to drop the war right away - the first step is a mindset change. Start calling this an implementation detail in version whatever. It's hard to say who will have the time to do what work here when - but removing limits will allow many changes that are hard to impossible in a webapp world.
