Thanks for the clarification Chris,
That’s all fair and I very much agree with the philosophy of teaching people to fish. Shad has certainly invested a lot of time getting me (and others!) up to speed on various aspects of the project, and I greatly appreciate that. Shannon, too, has been super helpful in that regard. I sometimes feel bad I’m unable to contribute more, but as I mentioned, we’re all juggling. I think another reason I don’t merge PRs as much is because I find I can chime in on discussions even if I only have a small time slice to give. However, I’ve found that reviewing and merging a PR requires a larger time slice since there is often a decent amount of analysis involved. That’s not always the case, of course, but often it is. So maybe that helps explain my behavior at least. Still, I think your raising the question of why more PMC members aren’t merging in PR’s has been useful (at least for me personally) in that it’s caused a bit of self-reflection 😊 You are appreciated, -Ron From: Christofer Dutz <christofer.d...@c-ware.de> Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2024 12:25 PM To: ron....@giftoasis.com; dev@lucenenet.apache.org; 'Shad Storhaug' <s...@shadstorhaug.com> Cc: 'Christofer Dutz' <cd...@apache.org> Subject: AW: Personal feedback to the projects recent activity Hi Ron, with „committer material“ I wasn’t referring to their skill level or reputation, more if there are people in that group, that appear to be dedicated or committed to the project and could be enabled to contributing more by making them committers (Some people say a committer is someone who can commit, but I usually see people as committers, who are committed to the cause). I would say the one thing that helps enabling people to contribute, is to let them contribute. Give them the feeling that it’s ok for them to contribute and that it’s even ok to break something (Version control makes it possible to undo everything that might have been broken). Offer yourself as Mentor for new contirubtors and be there for them, if they need you. In the beginning this might seem to be more work, but on the long term you enable them to stand on their feet and do the things you would otherwise have had to be doing. Teach them to fisch, so you don’t have to provide them with a constant stream to keep them fed. But that’s just my opinion. And I wasn’t implying an overly high committer-bar or that someone is gatekeeping … It’s just that I saw a pattern and started asking questions. I certainly agree it'd be great if more PMC members actively participated in merging PRs. But from my perspective, there is no purposeful gatekeeping going on in the project. You raise a fair question, "Are any of these contributors considered committer-material?" but it did make me chuckle. Not that StackOverflow developer community rankings are the end all be all, but personally, I rank in the top 1 percent, and I feel like there are other PMC members who are much more astute developers than I am. So, I don't think competence is an issue. The challenge, as I see it, is primarily about time availability among PMC members. Most of us are balancing demanding day jobs with our passion for LuceneNET. We're committed to the project and find great value in it, both personally and professionally, but finding additional time can be challenging. We're open to suggestions that might us find creative solutions to enhance our collaboration and efficiency. If you or anyone else in the community has ideas or strategies to encourage more active participation, we're more than open to them. I hope this perspective sheds some light on our current situation. We all strive to do our best, balancing our commitment to LuceneNET with other responsibilities. Thanks for your understanding and for being a part of this community. -Ron Apache Lucene.NET Committer and PMC member. -----Original Message----- From: Christofer Dutz <christofer.d...@c-ware.de <mailto:christofer.d...@c-ware.de> > Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2024 2:55 AM To: Shad Storhaug <s...@shadstorhaug.com <mailto:s...@shadstorhaug.com> >; dev@lucenenet.apache.org <mailto:dev@lucenenet.apache.org> Cc: Christofer Dutz <cd...@apache.org <mailto:cd...@apache.org> > Subject: AW: Personal feedback to the projects recent activity Hi Shad, are any of these contributors considered committer-material? If you go back a few more months, you will note that some PRs were submitted and merged by Apache committers. Of course, other committers are welcome to participate, but that just hasn't been the case lately. I have noticed that while there is a good number of people perticipating in discussions on this list and submitting PRs etc. there is only one person that seems to be merging PRs. Is there a reason for this? Usually a project shouldn't have a "gatekeeper" that is the only person doing stuff like that.
