In yesterday's board meeting this proposal was raised, and I must admit I found
it very, very odd.
Ed, you're not a PMC member, or even a committer, on this project, and have no
standing to either call this vote, announce this result, or shepherd the
project's move to the Attic.
Furthermore, the actual PMC chair reported, in the board report for October,
that the project was doing well. Specifically, "The community is relatively
small but very engaged with robust mailing list traffic, interest in doing
frequent releases, and new functionality being developed by contributors." And
that there were no issues for the board.
Then, suddenly, on the day of the meeting, after the board report was already
submitted and six directors had already pre-approved the report, we have the
report itself amended with this retirement proposal.
What's up? Who are you, and what authority do you have to make this kind of
radical change in the project?
Imagine my surprise, then, to discover that not only are you an engineering
manager at VMWare, but that *every single +1 vote* in the vote thread came from
a VMWare employee, and the one dissent came from someone who is not a VMWare
employee. This strikes me as more than simply a coincidence.
I will also note that your vote tally is not valid, since several of those
voting on that thread - yourself, Himanshu, Venkatesh - are not PMC members,
and thus those votes don't count.
Whether this project is ready for retirement is really a separate issue, but
this is some seriously irregular stuff going on, and I request that you have an
actual discussion on your user list about your intentions, rather than trying
to rush something through the week before a board meeting without any
notification whatsoever of your user community. And I ask that the PMC chair
speak up, here, and explain the complete contradiction between the board
report, and this motion to retire.
Thanks.
Rich Bowen, for the Board of Directors
