jmm commented on MAHOUT-1048:
-----------------------------

cluster-reuters.sh with kmeans is not working (I though I also tried fuzzy
kmeans and it didn't work either, not 100% sure). Also
factorize-movielens-1M.sh is not working (a patch is suggested here which
worked for me, though it's 4 months old and not yet accepted
https://github.com/apache/mahout/pull/4). lda.algorithm doesn't even run from
command line. classify-20.newsgroups.sh didn't finish without errors for me.

Basically I tried examples in that order and they kept failing, leading me to
believe my setup was faulty. When using the patch I mentioned above the example
did work though, confirming that my setup was correct. asf-email-examples.sh
also worked, unfortunately that was one of the examples I tried last.

FYI I used Hadoop 1.0.3.

> Most examples don't work when you try to run them on Hadoop. This is probably
> not an easy fix, but I would really help if this was atleast mentioned
> somewhere (website, readme, etc.). If this was mentioned, it could have saved
> me over 10 hours of fiddling with the examples, thinking my setup was wrong,
> when actually the examples are just failing :-)
> Please include a notice to prevent people from wasting a lot of time on
> trying to run Mahout's examples on Hadoop.
