TWAIN is available on the Mac. The standard MacOSX native drivers for scanners should be TWAIN as the image capture application supports it. However Macs can also use SANE (as do Unices), and there is a TWAIN-SANE interface (http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/) available for it, useful for those windows (otherwise non-supported) scanners. I tried to get it to work with NeoOfficeJ, but couldn't get it to work at all.
However the standard Image Capture application does not work with this interface at all - it apparently has some special TWAIN system. From the website above, MS Office Mac and Photoshop can acquire TWAIN over SANE. It is a system which works.
I don't have a 'native' MacOSX scanner so I can't test the in-built TWAIN system. Best to email the OOo Mac people, or the NeoOffice people to see if they know about it, as they probably have tested it somewhere.
