Browsing the web searching for SO informations, I found this page : http://staroffice.com/
This site has nothing to do with OOo or Sun. So nothing on this site is "official". Look at the owner of staroffice.com at http://resellers.tucows.com/whois
So ignore them. There isn't an official book.
And if any book becomes official, it has
to be the one made by the community.
+1
I'm not sure that we should ignore that kind of fact. We have to made our list of books, advertise it and let people know who are contributors and who are not. I know Solveig long time's engagement in the community, but what I wanted to point is if an official book exist and whatever the site, it have to be decided by the community, no more than that :)
I'm sure Solveig did a great job with her book.
+1 And Solveig has also given lots to the community, as have you, Sophie. It has been my experience that people in the FLOSS community have long memories and deep loyalties. In fact, that is also supported by Steve Weber's original research in the book, The Success of Open Source. He found that people tend to work on just one or two projects, and that those few who are the most active tend to devote lots of time to those projects.
yes, and energy ;)
I know that I wish that I spoke more languages, because I miss out on a lot. I didn't even know that you had done a book, Sophie, or else I would have linked it here:

and here:

thanks for the attention.
I also note that your book was not listed by Diane Mackay, and she is very, very thorough:
http://www.mackmoon.com/OOoHelpOutline.html#Clip%20Art
this is the difficulty in fact for NLC to share informations. I've spoke of our book (we were 4 to write it) several times on different english lists, but nobody noticed because those lists are more for english speakers.
I will never forget that while we were filming in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in June 2004, the guy who was leading OOo in Brazil didn't know the names of Louis Suarez-Potts, John McCreesh, or Jacqueline McNally! It was a language issue! So I think that it is a good thing that this issue has come up, because we really do need to do a better job of keeping the various OOo communities in touch with one another.
Difficult task, but you're right, we need to speak about Louis, or Jacqueline or John or other project leads or members in NLC communities. I have explained what you were filming and point to your site, I'm also trying to advertise what's happening in projects, but it's not so easy. We (NLC) have a lot of work in our own projects, not so many contributors able to speak/read english and some of us are very shy too :)
But an official OOo book would have to be made by the community and distributed on a free license.
Or at least someone would have had to be active in the community to win goodwill, as you have earned, Sophie. Remember, when OOo first came out, we were all wishing that there were user guides. Now we have the user guides, and I personally am grateful for the hard work that people put into books. So I would encourage you in the future to let us on this list know of your work, because we WANT to support you. Your success advances market share by FLOSS, which is important to probably 99% of the people on this list, IMHO.
Thanks a lot :) The best in a wonderful OOo world would be to have a reporter by project ;) Lot of good things are happening in so many places in that community that it seems difficult to support all those efforts. But any way, let starts with books. I'll ask on NLC to post a list and some infos about the authors or the content on [EMAIL PROTECTED] or Ger, may be would prefer we open an issue about it.
Kind regards Sophie
