I didn't say we should not have a presence at linux confs, just that we should not do it to the detriment of other types of conferences.

But you see, the message I got (and I believe others got) from your post was that you were saying that linux confs were not particularly valuable.

In terms of spreading the word, they aren't. We need to define our goals in terms of the conferences we attend and the limited resources which we apply to them.
For instance if Ian and I had had the resources available to us at the Moodle conference we would have been able to make contact with every major tertiary intstitution in NZ. The EduCAUSE conference will have high end representatives of every tertiary institution in Australasia. THAT is spreading the word

It's about targeting your market. The DLS was ideal for Ian to sell INGOTs. It was ideal for people who want to put faces to text, excellent feel good factor. Sales conferences aren't about making sales, they're about learning about HOW to make sales.

And we are responding to that saying that they are. No one here has said that they are the only thing we should ever do.

True, but I have never seen conferences discussed on the lists that are not linux conferences, other than the Moodle conference of course

But we are definitely saying that they are inmensely valuable.

I am sure you're right but we need to define the value so that we have definitive goals for each conference.

So for instance if the goal was to spread INGOTs then the conference was obviously a success. If the goal was to introduce OOo to greenfield clients then it was probably a bomb.
If it was to be a get together for OOo people to meet and be revitalised then it would be a success, and that is a success that should not be underrated.

For me the success of the Regicon is in the fact that we now know where our deficiencies lie and what we need to do to lift our game and INGOTs is spreading like wildfire.

However, despite such successes and those that Jean mentioned, from a "spreading the Word" POV, the chances are that much was preaching to the converted.

For me set me up a booth at a Microsoft conference, nothing like selling Fire Extinguishers to the Devil. Now that would be fun. :)

Cheers
Yo
