Mmmm, Sun are part of the project.
Understood, but in the open source community isn't it somewhat
believed that Sun is the only part of the project. If you go to this
convention and you ask everyone at the booth who they work for and
they say Sun, then that perception is perpetuated. It doesn't have
the feel of the community.
I concur. The perception everywhere is that OOo is just a Sun
project. There is very little perception of a "community" around the
project. And most people in the open source community mistrust Sun. I
think that Sun's way of marketing OOo is perpetuating this problem.
On the other hand, if there were an "OOo booth" instead of a "Sun
booth" and there had been arrangements to get volunteers there (e.g.
Adam suggested announcing it further ahead) it would create a more
positive impression. The "OOo booth" would have a couple of
volunteers, and a couple of Sun employees. Marketing is about giving
a good impression, right? This would give a good impression.
Irrespective of the fact that Sun does more than 50% of the work. It
sends the impression of a community comprised of both volunteers and
Sun employees.
Maybe if OOo was marketed more like this, we'd get more volunteers
indeed. Right now we all feel that there aren't enough volunteers.
Part of that, I think, is the chicken and egg problem where people
don't want to join a Sun project, therefore we have few volunteers,
therefore it's a Sun project. And this is were good marketing comes
in to save the day.
I also second everything Adam say about appreciating Sun's work.
Cheers,
Daniel.
Isn't this the same way we have market ourselves at LinuxWorld, CeBIT,
DesktopLinux and other events. We just need more marketing responsibles to
guide the regional members to the host event.
This happened with OOo Brasil (http://www.openoffice.org.br/fisl2004/) for the
international forum just a few months ago and soon it will happen for XpoLinux
in Mexico.
