Hi,

I second Eric's thanks. Both Adam and Matthew presented interesting
reviews of OOo. Thanks.

OSCON is not marketing heavy. It's mainly a developer meeting, or at
least tries to be. Actually, this year was the largest ever, with
over 3100 attendees. However, the exhibit hall, was cavernous, and
though it was set up well, it still seemed smaller than expected.

The OOo BOF, presided over by Stefan and me, went well, with maybe
half a dozen attendees. That's normal. We discussed fonts, mainly,
and a few other random things.

I think for next year we should focus on developer tutorials and the
like. Those tend to be popular and also, I think, effective. It will
require some coordination with developers, however.

Definitely OOo would benefit from a larger developer core there, If
they weren't so busy developing. :)

OOo would benefit from more developers ANYWHERE.
The dearth of OOo developers is because...

-- OOo's licenses are unappealing to individual contributors
            solution: GPL

-- OOo's build process is unnecessary difficult
solution: build and participate through the Novell fork

-- OOo's joint copyright ("JCA") is unacceptable to many individuals
            solution: GPL + Foundation

-- OOo's JCA takes too long to process through Sun legal
solution: file and work through the Novell fork

It took me a long time to recognize this, so it'll save you a bit.

I'd like also then to thank Stefan for flying out from Germany to
attend. I'm glad that Stefan could make it this year, and hope he
will again next.

Cheers

Thanks Eric I appreciate the opportunity. I wish I could have been
more active during the week. It was nice to meet people I only read
about and to get an idea of what other people look at or think about.

A special thanks goes out to Matthew Bennett for all his help. You
really made the week special for me and my family.

By the way guys OSCON was interesting. Somewhat smaller than I was
expecting, but then again I didn't go to any of the BOF's or other
talks. My guess is that part is the big reason for it. Maybe next
time...

Hello,

I wanted to express my thanks to Matthew and Adam for promoting
OpenOffice.org at OSCon this previous week.

They were both kind enough to spare personal time and give
presentions
relaying their experience with, and knowledge
of, OpenOffice.org.

As a Sun employee I'm grateful these community members were
confident in
representing OO.o in a booth with a Sun label.
And as an OO.o member and user, I was thrilled to see the impressive
knowledge base of OO.o OUTSIDE of Sun and to
make acquaintances (in person!) with other folks in the community.

Thanks again, gentlemen!

Eric
