Hi @all,
(CAUTION: loooong posting...)
thanks to all of you who joined the thread by now bringing proposals
for a "official" positioner we could contribute with the logo at the
logo gallery thus making the project's appearance more consistent.
I'd like to cite Steven Sheldon, who told me on [EMAIL PROTECTED] about
the importance of a good positioner instead of two or three
different ones:
Well, the positioner is more than just a few catchy words about
the product. It should be the central theme of the marketing
campaign: the one thing you want people to remember when they
hear of your product/company/service/whatever. It kind of defeats
the purpose to have more than one because it confuses the
message. Ideally, the positioner should lend itself to all kinds
of peripheral messages. For instance, I used to work at a
non-profit that managed group homes for adults with developmental
disabilities. The positioner I developed for the organization was
"Community. Home. Independence." We were able to use this in
several ways: to talk about how the people we served were just
like everyone else (individuals with their own identities, part
of their families, and an active part of the larger community),
to work with fundraising (asking for support from the
communities, from the families of the people we served, and from
individual donors), to promote advocacy (working to educate the
community, to encourage family participation and support, and to
help the people we served be better able to advocate for
themselves), and so on. So we were able to promote all of these
different things but tie them into the single central positioner.
That should be our goal.
Most of the proposals posted here show more than one aspect of
OpenOffice.org - as well the product as the community.
It's nearly impossible to include *all* different aspects of OOo
into one short sentence, but here are more marketing experts than in
some large company - and with that brain power we should find a
phrase (at least for the next releases).
I tried to categorize the proposals according to the different
aspects they cover - it's not easy and probably I did some mistakes
trying to pigeonhole them.
The way I want you to vote is different from the normal procedure
(+1/-1) because of the huge number of possibilities. As I mentioned
in the first posting (and nobody refused it) you may give up to 10
points to the best and 9 to 1 points to the next ones.
You don't have to use all possibilities - If you like two proposals
very much and one is quite good, give a 10 and a 9 to the two and a
4 (or what you think) to the third.
In order to avoid confusion please quote this mail (partially) for
voting.
I hope it is understandable...
The categories - as far as I could divide them - are
A) OPEN DOCUMENT / FREEDOM
- OASIS standard (upcoming international standard)
- open file format, not stuck to proprietary file format
(modify document directly, no future converting problems)
- independence from specific software (no monopoly)
- no restrictions by software producer, Digital Rights Management
- easy document exchange between programs and OS
B) UPGRADE
- from OOo1.x to OOo2.0
- from MS Office (97) to OOo
(upgrading to MSO12 will be as hard as switching to OOo)
C) OPEN SOURCE / OPEN LICENSE / OPEN CODE
- everybody can contribute to the code
- patches are easy to be implemented (see D)
- special applications can be linked directly to the code
- different distributions with varying priorities/implementations
D) QUALITY
- low quality image is wrong / over (despite of FUD)
- more and more business/administration users
- good qa with lots of volunteers
- rapid user support
- fast implementation of patches (see C)
- easy to use
E) MULTILINGUAL
- easy to understand for native users
- international support for smaller native groups
F) FREE OF CHARGE
- no licensing costs in the future (better calculable)
- cheaper than the competitor with drastic price reduction
G) COMMUNITY / EMOTIONAL BINDING
- a huge number of volunteers support the product
- being part of a "good thing", feeling good, "loving OOo"
- meeting friendly people / friends from all over the world
- learning a lot for your own benefit
There will be even more important messages concerning OOo, I tried
to use the ones from the positioner proposals (and some of my own
thoughts).
As you see the number of points, there is (probably) no chance to
find the one and only positioner.
Please keep in mind - it's the product OOo2.0 we're looking for a
positioner by now.
I sorted the proposals according to the number of categories they
cover IMHO - please make your own ranking by voting!

Please take the time to vote - only with many people concerned we'll
reach a valuable result!
I'd like to end the voting in four days (96 hours) from now on - so
we could include the positioner in the Style Manual (Issue 54289)
the Community Council will have to decide about at Koper.
Thanks in advance!
