Hi,
I am aware that the reason for OpenOffice.org being named OpenOffice.org
and not just OpenOffice is that someone somewhere own some rights to the
name OpenOffice. Couldn't we try to contact that guy and ask what the
price would be to make him give up those rights?
No, your assumption is wrong. There is more than one organisation (in
more than one country) using the name Open Office or OpenOffice.
Even if he wants a lot
of money it could still be reasonable to ask some of OpenOffice.org's
sponsors to pay it. From a marketing perspective it would surely be
wonderful if we were allowed to call the product just OpenOffice.
The .org in the productname directly makes clear this is an Open Source
project and people are tempted to try out the name in a browser to see
more about the product. So actually I think the .org is a good thing
from a marketing point of view.
