My idea is to start a blog that documents the fact that a SOHO
can be run entirely on Free Software. AND that a freelance writer
can have success using only OOo.
IMHO there are several freelancer using OpenOffice.org already - and
there is no reason not to use OOo.
HOWEVER- my research indicates that most of the people that will
be paying me to write will require Word Documents.
Just tell them, that ODF has been approved as international standard
as ISO 26300, show them a link to download OpenOffice.org from the
homepage.
Most of them don't really need MS Word documents - they don't know
enough about OpenOffice.org.
Therefore I would like to see if you would be interested in a
joint venture:
For a volunteers community "joint venture" is not the most
appropriate term.
You already profit from the work done in our project by using
OpenOffice.org as an office software with a lot of features (some
even better than other office software) without any purchase or
licensing fees.
I'll do the work and the blog which will help promote OOo.
That's a good idea to give something back of the positive aspects
you got from OpenOffice.org.
But if I run into compatibility issues, I'd like your tech people
to help me sort them out.
If these documents are allowed to make public, you may attach them
to an issue, so the coders can try to optimize the program by
including patches for this kind of documents in one of the next
releases.
But you will never can be sure that
- a patch will be available in a short time
- this patch will be included in the next release
So there is no chance to get any compatibility issue fixed during
your work if you don't pay a coder by yourself...
But I can assure you - there are just a few compatibility issues,
and they become less in every new version of OpenOffice.org.
IMHO 99% of the documents look quite the same in OOo and MS Word...
This will not only promote OOo, it should give you a fair amount
of data that you can use to improve what is already an excellent
program.
Your idea is good - please do, what you want to do to promote
OpenOffice.org and to improve the code by providing some not really
good converted MS Word documents.
But please don't think the community will be able to fix your
compatibility problems in a few days or weeks...
What say you-would you like to have OpenOffice.org be the program
of choice for Freelance Writers everywhere?
Of course - don't hesitate to tell about OpenOffice.org everybody
you talk to :-)
Best regards
Bernhard
