I'm not shure this is really a marketing issue, but since I'm on the marketing mailing list, I'll introduce my proposal here...
Might be in place on dev and dev-api as well, however, lets start here.
Thanks for the idea.

As an OOo freak and Linux user, I have often felt frustrated about the fact that most Linux ditributors do not distribute the standard OOo with their distro but some sort of "Enhanced" OOo (though, usually its' not possible to tell what the "enhancements" really are). This causes many problems - one of them is that i makes it much more difficult to support OOo on Linux than on Windows.
Agree.

think they should do. Still I think that we might be able to persuade some Linux distributors to work closer with OOo, which means taking our product as it is without adding their own "salt and pepper" to it.
Do we realy know why? Or do we think we know why they do it?
Could a carefull communication with the right persons be a first step te get more understanding at both sides?

One of the ways to "persuade" them could be that we mentioned the "recommended Linux distributions" from an OOo point of view on the www.openoffice.org.
I'm not sure if that will make OOo more popular :-\
No better idea as well, at the moment. Or maybe some slight adjustments in our process or OOo's possibilities could help?

Greetings,
Cor
