Hi,

I'm not shure this is really a marketing issue, but since I'm on the marketing mailing list, I'll introduce my proposal here...

As an OOo freak and Linux user, I have often felt frustrated about the fact that most Linux ditributors do not distribute the standard OOo with their distro but some sort of "Enhanced" OOo (though, usually its' not possible to tell what the "enhancements" really are). This causes many problems - one of them is that i makes it much more difficult to support OOo on Linux than on Windows.

I think Louis mentioned the problem when he was on the LinuxForum conference in Copenhagen last spring.

If there's a common consensus in "OOo-land" that this is a problem, I suggest we begin to think about what we can do to change it. Of course the LGPL gives the Linux distributors the right to do (almost) whatever they want to the OOo source code, so we can't force anyone to do what we think they should do. Still I think that we might be able to persuade some Linux distributors to work closer with OOo, which means taking our product as it is without adding their own "salt and pepper" to it. One of the ways to "persuade" them could be that we mentioned the "recommended Linux distributions" from an OOo point of view on the www.openoffice.org.

Comments, please?

Best regards,

Finn G. Larsen

A couple of years ago Linspire founder Michael Robertson even came to the list with the proposal of having a Linspire download on the OOo site but he got a lot of flameback. I am not sure if this result will be any different if it was Mark Shuttleworth with Ubuntu. Ever since RPM were out, there has been a lot of Debian/Ubuntu/Slackware people comming with questions about installing their OOo natively.

These are some of the challenges that we are facing right now and the linux distribution has enhaced the OOo build stripping the non-free Java dependencies, as well as other OOo themes for their gnome/kde (OOo just recently is natively integrated) as well as some connection with the actual OS.
