I have noticed that most of the business managers e.g. CEOs, CFOs, COOs, Mktg,
Logistics heads (atleast in India, and some of the foreign clients, I've
dealt with) are not aware of OpenOffice.Org (or for that matter, any of the
open source software), because the business magazines and news papers, they
read, do not discuss the open source software.

It is finally the business people who decide the adoption (and methods of
managing the acceptance). It will be a good idea to arm them with information
and statistics about OO.o

OpenOffice is in a strong position to change the open source acceptance
scenario, since it is :

(a) A prime need for any office (home etc.) environment, where the
alternatives are expensive.

(b) It can run on allmost 100% of the desktops, Windows inclusive. OO.o can be
flag bearer for open source in Windows 'world'.

(c) User training requirement is minimal (far less than any other OSS
application).

(d) Suits most of the requirements for most of the people.

I'd suggest that, thru OpenOffice local contacts in various countries,
OpenOffice should be able to do a business benefit campaign by publishing
articles in the technology / IT section of these magazines / news papers.
Most of the newspapers and magazines will do this free of cost (if not goaded
by Microsoft to not to do so, in that case, please publish the names of
people contacted and the news papers / magazines details on your web site, so
that other methods may be used or influential people may be brought in to
manage publication of the articles). The articles should also provide a
little insight to students about how they can use and involve in improving
OO.o. Additionally, the students should be made aware that participating in
OO.o development adds value to their resume.

I'd further suggest that, if possible, some of the top business magazines may
be made to accompany CDs in one of the issues, which carries Windows based
open source software (along with other Open source software). The CD may be
subsidised with co-branding OO.o (the magazine (group) itself, IT companies,
white goods, retail, consumer electronics, CD manufacturers) and
advertisements. May be each of the application can be separately co-branded.

Interestingly, in India, I have seen, small regional news papers (in regional
langusges) carrying an IT (or technology) section / supplement. And some of
them even have Linux mentioned.

Lets try and welcome more people into the OO.o realm.

Atul

Subject: Spreading the message of OpenOffice.Org : signatures in email

I suggest that OO.o users be requested to add a signature, something like I
have with this mail, to their emails. I feel, standardised signatures will be
a much better better.

Also, it may not be a bad idea to request OEMs (Dell, Lenovo, Acer, HP etc.),
who sell windows loaded PCs, to load oo.o. Is this possible? Do they have a
legal binding not to load non-MS software? Any other issues?

Atul

I use Linux, instead of MS Windows.
Linux is a free operating system, which does not crash and is not
