Yes, it's true that we need to branch out to mainstream media. Or at least to other niches besides tech.

The first logical targets are places where there is some overlap already, such as scientists, students, and non-profits. I know there are efforts in all kinds of different areas, but I don't know the current status of most of them.

Italo Vignoli has successfully developed a lot of press coverage from his efforts in Italy. I suggest getting in touch with him to discuss his methods (he's a professional in the public relations field and has lots of experience).

Along these lines, one thing I wonder is whether the places I get publicity (Digg, Slashdot, etc.) reach new audiences and whether I/ we can tap into any new markets, so we're not "preaching to the choir."
