There were few changes in the dependencies (for example having wagon-* 1.0_beta7 versions instead of 1.0_beta6.), but I don't think that's a fork per se. And, for the _system_, there will be a maven eclass, which handles the versioning. Gentoo has the concept of SLOTs, the which you can think of as baskets, each containing a set of compatible versions.
